Default Engine Numbers search

A co-worker of mine just picked up a motor with the following numbers:

Casting at left back of block: 3782870
Casting on right back of block: EG5 or E65
Casting near oil filter: N66 852
Casting on rear of block behing flywheel: SPECIAL H23 870 852
The word special is above the H23 870, the number 852 is under the number 870.
Stamped on front right pad: F0508HC
Bore & Stroke make it a 327
Anyone know what this may be?

Hey Paul - I came up with 2 possibilities, one of which is a 327. 1965, 327, powerglide, 275 HP, 4 barrel from a full size Chevrolet. I don't have my other info with me here at work so I will check for additional info when I get home, unless that is enough for your purposes. This is based on the pad info.

Steve, The guy is going to go back and recheck his numbers. If it's and HC then you are probably close, but if it's and HG, then he's got a good motor. One thing to add here, he says he can not find a VIN derivitive on the pad. He still needs to clean it up a bit, so I think he'll probably find one under the rust.

If it is an HG and the date code puts it as a 1965 then a great find - 1965 Corvette, 327, fuel infected, manual trans, 375 hp (that hp number doesn't seem right). Anyway, great find. If it is an HG with a 1968 date, then 327, powerglide, 250 hp, 2 barrel from a full size.

The word "speical" cast on the back of the block tells me it probably isn't a 250 or 275 HP motor, but who knows what the General did back in the day...... The oil pan is still on it and he says he remembers it having a double step in it (like the HiPerf pan). He's going to get me pics Monday.

I have a 1967 code HC motor. A while back someone from the forum sent me the '65 codes as well. It says a '65 HC is a 250 HP 4BBL with 10.5:1 compression.

The 3782870 block was used for all passenger and Corvette applications for the 1965 model year. All should have nodular bearing caps. On 300hp engines and above they all have chamfered main bearings. For 1965 the "HC" code was for the 327/250hp 4-bbl Powerglide passenger car applications.

The "HG", as previously noted, was the Corvette 327/375 FI manual transmission application.

Engine was cleaned up over the weekend and the numbers have been confirmed to be an HG shortblock ('65 327/375). Other relevant numbers are in the first post above. Even had the original large oil pan still installed. I convinced the guy not to hotrod this motor, so it will be for sale if someone needs a correct shortblock for a restoration project.
Disassembly is still ongoing to determine the shortblock's health. So far, the crank has been mic'd and it has not been undersized. Going to mic the cylinder bores today.
