Is a heat riser neccsary on driver side..... mine is missing on a 65? can i just put a spacer there? also where does the heat riser conncect to ...or is it stand alone?
Heat riser only goes on the passenger side. It is just a valve that blocks the flow of exhaust down the exhaust pipe. This forces the exhaust to travel through passages in the heads and intake manifold specifically for this purpose. It is designed to quickly warm the intake manifold after cold weather starts.
DO NOT try to put one on both sides. Both exhaust pipes would be blocked on a cold start and the engine would not run.
Another note: These things contribute to the passenger side exhaust rotting out due to reduced exhaust flow, especially if you drive short trips. If you don't drive the car in cold weather, I recommend wiring the valve into the open position. Then if you want to do NCRS judging you just remove the wire. Or you can do what I did and eliminate it with custom exhaust. Get rid of the useless restriction.
If you want to maintain the stock look without the restriction, you can just eliminate the valve on the inside. That way it looks the same from the outside.
If you're heat riser is like mine, the thing was stuck in the open position anyway.
