Last year while driving home from an outing, I had a run-in with a Pinto...
I almost couldn't pull away from this guy.
Figured he had something under the hood so when he stopped at a burger place I did as well to have a look see
He popped the hood....
This thing was a 4 banger
He said that he had to slip the clutch all the way to keep up with me
It is absolutely unreal how much power a turbo and shot of nitrous can produce...
My little mouse held it's own though
It will still get rubber in 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Haven't done that in a while... :steering:
Now I play it cool
I think if I had 500+ HP I would get into some kind of trouble... Fast
That old school LS7 actually produces 550+ hp, where as those bench racers can only talk about HP. My answer, PROVE it! A 1000 hp car would be a easy 9 second 140 mph piece. My 68 stock crate LS7 Camaro does run 11.40 at 119 mph on straight motor and I drive it back and forth to the track and CAN prove it. Quite a bit faster than a lawntractor. :D
Wallyknoch,
Yea this motor really comes alive when I run straight cam 2 and advance the timing, especially above 4000 rpm but I cant get any traction with these repo tires. I was just wandering how it compares with these bigger high hp engines. My engine is also a stock LS7 crate engine.
Dave,
And all this time I thought you had a 327 and its a six cylinder.
Jeff
I have owned several Big Block Corvettes and Chevelles. You must remember that these things are using 30+ year old technology. THEY ARE DINOSAURS. Cars today can make the same or more horsepower, idle smoothly, have hydraulic lifters, plugs last 100,000 miles AND get 20+ MPG. Old Big Block cars are great nostalgia items but todays stuff will run circles around them.
I have a set of 9 in. slicks for the car, Jeff. That helped launch the car. It is consistant at 1.6 60 ft. times with a turbo 400 and a 4.56 gear. Nothing fancy, a 850 Holley on top of a L88 intake, some speed rated front tires and Hooker Comp headers and Walker 3 in. race mufflers with the exhaust exited in front of the rear tires. It was already a SS 396 350 hp piece which helped as it`s stock with the 12 bolt rear. We put it together as a street toy. No roll cage however and they made me stop running the car or else slow it down to the 12`s. Try some 9 in. slicks with about 12 to 15 lbs of air and press on the gas. Then hang on! :D
Your correct on them being Dinosaurs. So are the early Vettes and a lot of them run so poorly and they can hardly make it to there circles. But not every big block though. It all depends on where the circles are, and most of them are around benches! :D Pull them out on the street and we can see if the late models run as fast as their owners mouths.
Hey there slick YOU MEAN I can actually use those extra two cylinders   I thought they were just there for spares  btw got spark.. Hey when you decide to take her to the strip can I be ballast in the passenger seat.. Dave..
Wally
What rpm does these motors make the most hp and tourqe. Its hard to find much info about them since they are no longer made. My car has a 3.55 gear probably needs to be lower to take advantage of the long duration cam these motors have. When I bought the car it had 2 1/8 super comp headers on it , ex out the back, I put sidepipes and headmon sidepipe haeders on it that are only 1 3/4 , probably lost some hp there on top. Its a blast to drive and the LS7 cam sounds good through the pipes.
Jeff
Dave lets put those 2 cylinders to good use.
Hi Jeff, They pull to nearly 7 grand, after that you want to shift before it flattens out. George Delorian gave me a set of new Dart polished aluminum heads and the related parts, with longer push rods and head bolts. He claims the L88 intake will work with out any problems and we changed to a taller lift cam, Federal Mogul CS1110R 612x637. I could have used a solid roller cam with a even higher lift, but I dont like roller anything for the street because of the constant maintenance. I want to drive it, not work on it. And reaching in over a good paint job and getting it accidently all scratched up is not what I like. I built it as a sleeper, not a racer as mine looks completely stock. The least restrictive the exhaust the better. With a 3.55 gear in your car, once it starts to lose traction, you will boil the tires. A shorter gear will help prevent that. I like 4.10`s as a alternative. Hell, your not going cross country. Just red lite to red lite :D Good luck with the piece.
