Default Distributor rebuild question

OK, so now I have the correct (for my L79) Echlin VC1810 vacuum can. I notice that when mounting the can to the distributor body, the pushrod makes contact with the distributor body iteself. It seem as if there are supposed to be some washers or spacers underneath the points where the can is screwed to the body. The B1 can that came off has the same problem. According to my GM parts manual and all the service manuals I have, the can mounts directly to the distributor housing, but this just doesn't seem right....

Nicky,

The rod is very close to the one side, but should not contact either the sides or the bottom of the slot. No washers or spacers are used. I have to "assume" that your dist. slot was not cut properly by the factory if you have rubbing with 2 different cans. Maybe a little work with a file is in order!

I have worked with quite a few of these dist. and have never seen this before.

Good luck,
Plasticman

If I understand you correctly the diaphram pushrod is contacting the slot in the dist. housing where the vacuum can penetrates the housing. Could be the dist. was not properly machined. Just file down the slot until there is no interference. You are correct that the vacuum can mounts directly to the housing. There might be some lockwashers under the mounting screw heads, but there is nothing between the vacuum can and the two mounting bosses in the housing.

Plasticman & Duke,

Thanks for the fast replies. The vacuum can pushrod is VERY close to the housing where the forward mounting screw is located (the one nearest the can itself), but actually makes consistent contact between the bottom of the pushrod and the housing itself. I will clearance it tomorrow. Just wanted to make sure that I was not overlooking something obvious before I started massaging the housing itself.

Many thanks,

I wouldn't worry about the rod rubbing. The force of the diaphragm pulling on the rod is pretty strong. If you test it with a hand held vacuum gun and the vacuum advance is fully deployed at 8", why alter your housing?
