I'm going to replace the steering box in my 67 to try and get a little less slop in the steering. It is faster to install a rebuilt unit, but I don't know if there is a date code on the original unit; or if anyone cares about steering box date codes.
I'm pretty sure the steering box is coded. Depends on whether or not YOU care about it. I didn't, so I just got a replacement. I know there are services that will rebuild yours and send back to you also. Take that route if you care about keeping the original if you think it is. Chances are, the steering box is original. They didn't wear out too quick, and it's not something people rob from these cars.
I know others on this Forum have rebuilt their own. I don't think it's too difficult and I probably could have handled it, but I had too much other stuff going on. Good luck  Brian
