Ignition system choices?
1 MSD distributor and a 6A box
2 Mallory Unilight distributor
3 Original point style distributor
Thinking of bidding on a Malory set up on ebay in another hour. :seeya
Had one on a car for 17 years, and replaced
the cap & rotor once out of guilt.
( It was on the car when I bought it, not sure how old it was?)
Very hot set up with their square coil.
The car would always start in less than a second.
I thought it was a very neat way to go.
Just my experience.....
In general, a good points system will work just fine for most "street" engines, as long as you understand that it needs to be looked after occasionaly (gives you the opportunity to spend a 1/2 day in the engine compartment checking other items as well, and ignition timing still needs to be checked occasionaly either way - since "things" still wear). If the dist. has worn bushings (and the resulting misfire from random dwell changes), the addition of a pointless system will lessen this problem considerably (point systems reley on the cam/rotor to be revolving in a wobble-free dynamic, whereas a pointless system does not - until the wobble becomes so severe that the rotor starts to contact the cap terminals or the shutter/pickup collide in the electronic switch!)
One point I would like to stress, is that all electronic switches result in a voltage loss vs. a good set of points (semi-conductors have an inherant voltage drop whereas points operate at zero voltage drop). But, electronic units can typically handle more current. If you go with an electronic version, get the matching coil for best results.
