502/502 GM Crate motor install questions..
Hey guys I've got a friend that is installing a 502/502 GM crate motor into a 67 BB coupe. He's having a problem with the air cleaner clearance, in that he doesn't have enough to feel comfortable closing the hood. Right now he doesn't want to change the intake manifold to get the clearance and is toying with the idea of some sort of alternative air cleaner set up. Has anyone put a 502/502 into their BB midyear??? I haven't searched the archieves yet b/c I don't have much time right this minute but I will later.. If this has been covered before you guys can flame me for not taking the time to look.. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would have you directly email him but he isn't really hooked into the net.. Thanks in advance... Dave...

I thought the 502/502 intake clearances were identical to my 454HO and I know I am running the stock air cleaner arrangement on mine... If there IS a higher intake manifold on the 502 then he can always go with the lower profile air filter (I know K&N sells them) to gain sufficient clearance.

I agree if the 502 has a Chevy intake and a drop top Chevy base on the air filter it should be exactly the same as a stock BB with the stock high riser aluminum manifold. If you have some other type of air cleaner or intake then i guess all bets are off.

Re: 502/502 GM Crate motor install questions.. (TheOman)
Thanks guys. I checked the archieves and it looks like quite a few people have done this swap. So with that being said he told me this morning that he is using the intake that came on it but I don't know what air cleaner base he is trying to use. I will find out this afternoon when I head back towards the house. From what I saw in the archieves the only difference externally to the 502 vs 427/454 is the fuel pump (Electric) and the exhaust manifolds will not bolt up. So if the 502 is externally the same dimensions it should fit. I'll keep you guys updated as I find out more information. Thanks.. Dave..

I would agree with the Oman that the stock air cleaner base should clear the hood (especially the BB hood) but don't know for sure as I didn't use it.
The other main change is to get the bracket that allows the clutch linkage "Z" bar to mount to the correct location on the block.
Just let us know if he has any other questions. I'm sure we can help.

Dave,
For a minute there I thought you were going to take that little motor out of your car and put a real motor in it .

I put a 502/502 in a 67 Coupe this spring. The intake/carb fit with no problem using the stock dropped base air cleaner - Rich Lagasse was very helpful with recommendations on other issues that came up such as oil pan (don't use the 6 qt. model that comes on the 502/502 - it will fit and the motor will bolt in, but the pan will scrape on even the slightest bump) and headers (don't use the factory exhaust manifolds as you will find they - and stock 2.5" side pipes - are WAY TOO restrictive for the 502) - put up another post if your friend has any other questions or problems - Joe

Hey guys talked to him again this afternoon, The discription he has is that with the carb on it he has only about 1.5 inches to the hood. He says that the intake is the one that came on it from GM. Do you guys have the # of the intake you have on your 502 and if it's still the one GM put on it. It maybe that he believes that the intake is the one that came on it originally b/c he bought this motor second hand. Also he mentioned that his pulleys don't line up correctly. ie. He told me he had to buy the aluminum one b/c the guy he bought it from changed out the one that was on it. Could you provide more info on the oil pan issue and what pan he should use. Thanks guys. I know this is harder since it's me asking the questions and not him so I appreciated and I know he does.. Dave.
Jeff you should know better I'm scraping just to get the better half to let me build up a small block. I don't even want to think what would happen if I started talking about a 7k motor. I think I would probably be living in the garage after that discussion. Not to say my garage isn't nice but it's much nicer sleeping next to her... no not my vette..  my wife..

Dave,
The number on the intake is #12363407 and the part number for the four quart oil pan (5 w/filter) is #12495360. The oil pan kit comes with the pan, four main cap bolts, the oil pump screen, the oil level tube, oil level gauge and the pan gasket. Moroso also now makes a pan with side kick-outs to fit the Gen V & VI engines but I'm not sure of the dimensions or how much ground clearance you will gain with them.
Getting an accurate measurement of the hood clearance is difficult. The method I used was to take one of those expandible magnetic tools used to pick up dropped nuts and bolts. Fit it inside the front portion of the carb and be sure to pad the top of it. Then expand it high enough to come into contact with the hood when closed. After compressing the tool by closing the hood, open the hood and take the measurement from the carb flange where the air cleaner base sits to the top of the tool. That should give him a very close measurement of the space he has to work with.
Hope that helps.

If all else fails and a different intake is required, maybe one of these Kinslers will fit.
This one tucks right under a second gen Camaro:
