Was talking with a friend of mine today and we were discussing Corvette paint codes and a question came up, specifically regarding the code numbers. I was always under the impression that the code number itself specified the paint mix (for instance the "982" code number used for Mosport Green in 66). Well, I was a little surprised to learn that the Donnybrooke Green in 1970 also used a paint code of 982. Now I KNOW that Donnybrooke Green and Mosport Green are not even close to each other, but how would a paint mixer/supplier be able to determine that 982 was one or the other? Is that paint code number used along with the model year to find the right mix?? Inquiring minds want to know, can anyone explain it to me...
It wasn't too unusual for GM to rename a color. For example, 59-62 "Roman Red" and 63-64 "Riverside Red" are the same code and the same color. I don't know specifically about the greens you mention, but I expect they are also the same.
The color code number on the trim tag (and in the spec book and ordering information) has to be used with the car's model year in order to pull the correct mix formula number; the two colors you mention ARE totally different, but carry the same paint sales code number.
John, you're right of course. The CODE is the same but the FORMULA numbers are quite different. I confuse the two sometimes. However, in some cases such as the two reds, the same FORMULA was used with different names depending on model year.
This is also true for Ralley & Monza Red. This is the story of my current car. I just assumed that when the previous owner went to paint the car know one noticed the color was off. It dosen't bother me since the car is a driver. I think the Monza Red (69 & 70 color) with the extra orange in it looks like a 60's color but if ever have the car repainted I'll make sure they know the diffrence and ralley red is what my car becomes.
