Default Speedo Not Working

My 66' speedo is not working. Can it simply be the cable, and if so is it difficult to replace? Any special thricks or things to watch out for?

Thanks

Could be: cable(cable components), plastic gear or drive gears in trannie, speedo head in IP.

Not much else in there.

The cable is certainly the first thing to check. Another possible problem is the plastic gear in the trans. You can spin the cable from the bottom and have a helper see if the speedo moves. If the cable has to come out, it unfortunately has to come from the dash end.

Yup. could be that simple. Could be more - speedo gear in the transmission, or the speedo itself, for example. Start by inspecting the cable jacket from the back of the speedometer out to the transmission. Make sure it's not pinched or melted (I melted the mine against an exhaust pipe). Then remove the cable from the transmission and see if it's lubed properly. Try turning the exposed cable-end by hand. It should turn relatively smoothy. If not, try lubing it (you can buy a plug/adaptor, with a zerk (grease) fitting in one end, that screws into the speedometer cable (and tachometer cable)). I think I got mine from mid-America Corvette, though I bet local parts stores may have them.

I can't remember which grease, I used, but I believe it was lightweight, white grease.

You can try spinning the cable end with a hand drill - this will tell you if the cable is binding, etc. If the cable is okay, you'll see the speedo move.

If this doesn't reveal anything, you can try replacing the cable. You can replace the entire cable, jacket included, or just the cable core. It's not hard to change the cable or the insert. If I remember correctly, it is held in the back of the speedometer with a clip.

After this, things get more difficult, though the speedometer gear in the transmission is cheap - I've never tried to change one.

Good luck,

Bob Gregory

Tom,

Get 2 1/4x20 by 4 inch long bolts, take the two end screws out of the dash and replace them with the two bolts. Then take the rest of the screws out of the dash. Now the dash can be slid out on the two bolts a couple of inches. Makes it a lot easier to get at the back of the speedometer. My speedo cable was not held in with clips, it is a barrel screw connection. Good Luch...

using the drill on the end of the cable works, but i think the drill has to be in reverse to get a milage reading. when i did this. i think moderate drill speed read aabout 30 mph steadily.

Is just the speedometer not working? What about the odometer/tripmeter? If the latter are working, I doubt that the cable is the problem. But, Stan is correct. It might be a good idea anyway to replace the cable and go from there.

If it is the speedometer, you're going to have to remove the cluster, pull the speedometer and sent it out for repair. I also recommend the Speedometer Service Company.

The speedo work off of magnetism and the odometers work off three gears. If neither are working I'd say you have a cable or trans gear problem. If just the odometers aren't working thats a real common problem the gears in the speedo main frame are worn and need replacing ...Try Corvette Clocks by Roger .
