Default Bleeding brake problem

I have 66 which I am trying to bleed the brakes. There is a new master cylinder and all new lines and calipers. I bench bled the master. When I try to bleed the system the pedal goes down but fluid isnt going through the system. Could this be a defective maaster cylinder. Car doesnt have power brakes

If you 'bench bled' the master cyl then you did get fluid out of the ports, correct? Could be (if you have a proportioning valve in the mc) that the ball has gone over center. This is easily fixed. Your manual will tell you how to re-center it. It does take a while however, if all is correct, to get fluid thru the line to the furthest brake cyl. If fluid level is going down in the mc, be patient and keep pumpin'.

I agree with MasterDave, :yesnod: if you had fluid coming out the ports on the bench, then it may take awhile, but it'll get there. Usually brake systems can actually be "gravity bled" pretty well by just filling the master cylinder and opening all the bleeders and being patient. You may have to SLOWLY depress the brake pedal a few times to get things going. Just make sure that you're keeping an eye on the fluid level, and be careful with the fluid if you're using dot 3. Good luck

Quick question- flagged "be careful with dot 3 brake fluid" Is there some characteristic other then it's moisture retention with dot 3 that we don't know? Also any reason why dot 4 should not be used and is it compatible with dot3?
 :seeya

It eats paint!! DOT4 does as well. Sometimes if you run out of fluid or are even pumping the brakes quickly it will squirt from an open MC. I always make sure the caps are on when pumping.
