I have to install a new Delco R59 battery with electrolyte. Does anyone know what the "plastic bag" trick is, or have any other suggestions, besides being incredibly careful?
Put the battery is a plastic bag, set the battery in the holder, then remove the bag. I disconnect the battery, drain down the radiator, remove the heater hoses at the heater, remove the expansion tank straps, and then move the tank and hoses out of the way. Remove the battery holddown, tilt the battery so you can lift it out. I don't use the plastic bag and haven't had a problem with spilling acid, but if you're a little nervous about it, slip a plastic bag completely around the battery before you lift it out.
On my `65 I can remove and replace the battery by just loosening the heater hoses at the fender well bracket, remove the tank straps, and push the tank far enough out of the way to clear. I do have to tilt the battery some but not enough to cause leakage. This is with a stock size group 24 but not an R59. Perhaps the R59's are more prone to leaking?
The last time I changed my battery I think all I needed to do was loosen the tank and get it out of the way enough to put the battery right in. I think I had to tilt the battery just a little bit; not enough to spill.

Re: Battery Installation (seeyalater)
Dam I had no idea what was involved till I wore down my battery in my 62 and had to hook up a chatget to it. I had a hard time reaching down to hook up the charger clamps. It looks like it will be a fun job when it comes time to put in a new one. a new one.
