Default Help Please

I can't get the 66 327 auto to not backfire and stall out when put into drive. I did a complete tune up, points, condenser, plugs, etc. When its idleing in park it runs fine with no missing. I did not change the coil or wires yet ill do that on monday but I don't believe this is the problem. The car sat before I bought it for along time. It had bad gas inside the tank. I pulled the front and rear off the holly to clean it and it was full of rust. I cleaned it the best I could and car runs better in drive but still backfires and stalls when I give it gas. Before I change the carb can I get some more suggestions to look at. Can the cam be bad? Also how many wires should be going to the coil. This car has three wires going to it.

Remove the air cleaner and see if you're getting an accelerator pump shot from the squirters when you pull on the linkage - tip-in backfires usually indicate a lean transition due to a failed or mis-adjusted accelerator pump. There's a needle check valve under the squirter that may be rusted shut as well. I'd get a genuine Holley rebuild kit and rebuild the carb - backfires can damage the power valve.

There should be three wires to the coil - a single black one from the distributor to the (-) terminal, and two pink wires at the (+) terminal - one from the ballast resistor, and one from the starter solenoid. The two pink wires are normally crimped together in a single spade terminal at the coil.

As John's said sounds like more rust in that carb. probably good idea to get an overhaul kit"Holley only" and couple cans of Gumout or any good carb cleaner and go through that carb.
The only problem being, that your carb is only going to rust up again
unless you address the real problem which is probably a rusty fuel tank.
If thats the case then you have to remove and replace or clean with a product such as Bill Hirsch fuel tank cleaner and sealant. The cleaner and sealant has worked successfully for me in the Vette and a motorcycle I've owned. LOL

Bob it looks like the gas tank was replaced by the previous owner because it looks new but the fuel that was inside smelled old to me. I put stabil in the tank and added new gas 93 octaine. The motor idles perfect no misses its only when I put it into drive and accelerate that it backfires and wants to stall. If I give it gas while in park it does not backfire and revs just fine. I think im just going to replace it ( the Carb ) and quit racking my brain on this one I think it is the original carb, it looks like it anyway. Thanks Angel

If it's the original carb (post the numbers/codes stamped on the front driver's side of the choke air horn), hang on to it - they're rare and valuable. If it is the original, I'd send it to Jerry Luck (best Holley guy on the planet) and have him rebuild/restore it.
