Gonna pull the engine next weekend in my 65 and have it rebuilt. It's a 4sp with air. any tips/advice or sites I should go to read up and make this as smooth and painless as possible.
Thanks in advance. I'm just starting this resto so I may be asking alot of dumb questions soon.
Oh yeah, since we're on the subject, is there anywhere I can get a choke assembly for the Carter AFB 3721SB cheaper than $185 from Edelbrock?
While you have the hood off and the rad. out, slick up the engine compartment, look over the headlight motors and adjustment pieces and make any needed repairs. If your tranny tunnel is missing the insulation there's no better time to add it. For sure go for a fresh throwout bearing and examine the clutch fork. Add petcocks to the block before you reinstall for easier coolant flushes. Do repairs to the battery tray if needed. Check over the tranny mount. This is a perfect time to replace u-joints if they aren't in great shape. Fresh needle bearing in the back of the crank instead of a bushing. Shifter rebuild?
It's a great time to do some small things that are more difficult when the motors in and the hoods on.
Just did this.. I pulled the everything off down to the short block and the tranny. It was very easy. I didn't remove the yoke b/c I didn't have plug at the time. I just wire tied it in so it would fall out and let all of the xmission fluid out.. I didn't use a leveler either just my floor jack under the tail shaft and as I lifted the motor out and foward it keep me at the right angle and didn't let the tail shaft hit anything. Needless to say this was the first time I removed an engine and not only did I not have any problems I did it by myself. So just as everything else just get out there and do it man. If you are careful you will have no problems. I used 5/8ths chain and #8 bolts to secure it to the hoist.. Dave..
