Default Midyear windshield installation...

A few months ago, I got a new rubber windshield seal and reinstalled the windshield exactly according to the '67 shop manual, with the cord, etc. Unfortunately, there was so much surface tension between the birdcage and the rubber, I could not seat the two top corners in correctly, since I think the "stretch" was uneven.

I have a new seal and will try this again, but I think I will use some lubricant like silicone grease on the rubber to help it slide into the frame easier. That dry rubber just won't move when it's inside the birdcage frame.

Anyone have an opinion or another solution to get the windshield seated properly? Thanks in advance.

Patrick,

You might try the lubricant that is used to put on glof club grips as it dries sticky after starting out slick.

Thanks Tom, but how much time does that give me? The rubber is going to continue to settle in and move probably (minutely) for a couple days at least when it's lubricated. When it's too tight around the top corners, it will also split, because of excessive tension. Just a thought, PT :D

I think it takes like 24 hours to set but really can't remember haven't done any clubs in years.

Good Luck,

Tom

Back in the old days when I use to install windshields in pickup trucks(same process) we would use a mixture of soap and water.

Thanks guys. This time I'm using NAPA body seam sealer instead of silicone. The seam sealer stays pliable, unlike silicone, which was a BIG mistake. I greased up the entire seal with lithium grease and will use WD-40 if I need some extra lube.

One other question...the shop manual says to pull both the cords at one time, but the illustration shows the tech pulling only one cord. Do you pull the seal over the lip one side at a time or both sides equally? Thanks

When we installed the windshield in my Grand Sport, I had a mobile auto glass outfit (with guys that had done midyear windshields before) come to the house to handle it; I pulled both ends of the rope from the inside while the two techs did their "push and smack" thing from the outside; hardest part was fitting the seal in the upper corners, but we managed to get it in without breaking it. They said that doing it one side at a time would make the second side a real bear.
