My 65 (300/327) has the 7 leaf HD spring and the rear suspension feels like it should be on a 1 ton truck. I am going to take the car on the 2004 HotRod PowerTour (Fort Worth,TX to Green Bay)and I dont think I could handle the ride with the current setup. I am trying to decide if I should switch to a 9 spring (OEM style) or would a composite spring be better. I wont be doing any racing, just some spirited driving every now and then. Any suggestions?
i also have a composite spg. (330 lbs.) from vette brakes in florida.
very cushy. but it gave a constant bouncy ride on highway. very annoying.
the standard shocks were not compatable w/spring. i needed to upgrade to gas shocks. since then ride and handling are much improved over stock shocks and 9 leaf. glad i made the swap.
I have the 330 lbs composite spring on my 66 big/block,very satisfied......no bounce at all, my shocks are monroe radial tuned......if you install & have bounce........ vette brakes has a specially tuned rear shock made for composite spring.,,,,,,,, installed myselF as winter project , bought from Muskegoin they manufactuer the composie spring TRW design, also reduced wieght by approx 40 lbs....worked for me :steering: :seeya :flag
I put the musgegon spring on 5 or6 years ago and is one of the best changes ever. I tried a few shock types and settled on the kyb shock by vbp to be the best overall for ride comfort and handling.
Also if you have a coupe you will find the fiberglass spring will isolate a lot of road noise and vibration. I forgot to mention I used the 330 lb springwhich was the old trw design. tried a couple others and they seemed to bouncy.
I recently put a VB&P 330# composote and could not believe the difference.I strongly reccomend it. As for the power tour I wish I could go ,it looks like a blast.

nothing but the proper 7 or 9 leaf steel spring for me !
i'd get a 9 leaf, and install a set of bilstein sport shocks...... and make sure your front springs are "std." rate/length also, who know's what you have up there now, (so many of these cars have been screwed up, and are way out of balance).
"vette brakes" has quality coils, rear leafs and the bilsteins (some of the replacement springs out there are of very poor quality, not to mention not the correct rate/length).

I replaced my 9 leaf with a VBP 300# spring 9 years ago and have been happy with it. As others have mentioned, it does bounce more over RR tracks, etc., but it's worth the trade off to me. Smoother ride, less squat on accelleration, flatter cornering, 40 lbs less weight, and the adjustable bolts make rear height adjustments a snap.
VBP is running a sale on composite springs right now, check our web site for details. The special is $299.95 for any spring rate with all mounting hardware
