I have been hearing a sound like something metal spinning in a tin can for a couple of days. It would come and go mostly when the car was cold then go away. Last night it started squeeling very loud and the needle was showing double the RPM's. The needle rests at 1500. The cable is new as well as the distributor so it has to be the tach internals.
Has anyone ever had this happen before and do you think it could be something simple once I get the tach out of the cluster for a better look. Other wise its new tach time. It was working perfectly before this happened and the cable ends are tight.
Been there, done it, fixed it..... its the tach cable :yesnod: what happens is that over the years the grease in the cable becomes hard and causes the cable insert to bind up on the grease, then it lets go and the whips the tach needle into the stratosphere..... with a loud squeal..... :yesnod:
Remember to get two 1/4 x 20 x 4 inch bolts and remove the two end screws on the dash and replase them with the bolts. Then remove the rest of the screws on the dash. Now you can slide the dash out on the 4 inch bolts and remove that pesky tach cable. When you are done you slide the dash back in a button it up...... Good luck.....
Thats great news achapman and a great idea for the cluster bolts. I will check it out on Saturday and let you know if that fixes it. Sounds very logical and would makes sence as to why it was doing it a small amount only when the car was cold until the grease warmed up.
I hope it fixes it because $109.00 at Christmas time for a new one, especially after she just got me my XM radio early for Christmas, the wife is not going for it. I can hear it now, just disconnect the stupid thing, its not like you cant hear the rpm's with those side pipes screaming in your ears. :skep: :flag
I doubt if it's the (new) cable - metallic screeching, jumping needle, and then needle resting at 1500 with the engine off says it's tach internals (magnet cup problem). I think it's tach time
Reading your post last night, tach cable was my first thought, right 'till I got to the point about the needle hung at 1500. Hopefully, there is a speedo shop in your area that can fix you existing tach. That will likely be cheaper than a new one. :auto:
