i lifted my 64 vert body this week using a corvette body sling...the doors are still on the car and are latched...i am more than impressed by the amount of body flex...the space at the rear top of the doors is nearly an inch...i put the body back on its stand...it would ruin my whole day if this body split at the rear of the rocker panels....anyone hane any thoughts on this or experience....john b
Hmmm, I had barely no flex at all. In the pic below you can see that the doors stilll line up while suspended in the air. After I put the body down I am still able to easily open and close the doors like it was sitting on the frame.
Did you have the straps in a similar position to these?
Just make sure it's supported.
I've seen old scrapped out midyears verts have the back fall off because of no support
I added support from the hinges to the striker bolt on the wifes '74 (t-top)
'cause I was a nervous nelly.
I used these arms as a point to lift the body with.
the link barely shows it.
I'm with Joe on this one, are you sure you had the straps in the right places? The two places shown in Joe's pics are the reinforced areas that are the proper places. When lifted there I would not expect a lot of flex like you described, especially with the doors closed...
Carefull here bro, you can easily crack the floor doing this on a vert without support. I used a couple motorcycle tie-downs to hold the rear up. I simply put them under the rear and hooked them to the center lift eye on my hoist. Very easy to adjust when lifting.
certainly appreciate all the help, especially the photos....i am going to go the poultry route....i will not use the strap at the rear on the rocker panels at all...i am going to put a 5.5 foot piece of pipe [cushioned with an old bkanket] across from wellwell to wheelwell [rear] with a piece of chain inside to connect to the rear part of the sling... this will let me lift without strain to the kickup area..thanks again.....john b
Where do you guys have your hoist set up at? 1ton, 1-1/2to? Who's brand of hoist are you using?
I got mine from a friend cheap so I didn't really shop for one. It's an Ex-Cell 2 Ton lift. After doing it, I realized it would be much easier with some sort of timber frame and a hoist because the legs of the hoist really introduce all kinds of issues when you're trying to move things in and out from under the body. Or maybe a set of four wheel dollies so you could just roll the chassis out sideways from under the body would work nicely.
