I'm in the process of cleaning up and rebuilding the 327 that's been in my '58. Right now I'm considering the crankshaft and water pump pulleys. So far I've bead blasted them down to bare metal to clean off all the old grime, paint and rust (gotta love blasting cabinets). Now I need to repaint them.
Should the belt channels in the pulley be left paint-free? Would a layer of enamel present a problem for the belts?
I've always painted in the groove as you can often see into them and it looks bad if rusted (which is what you will see if not painted after blasting).
The belt will wear off the paint at the tops of the grooves and I have never had any problems on around 5 engines that I have built over the years.
The pulleys were originally dip painted in semi gloss black enamel. I'd give them a good coat of quality primer and follow it with a top coat of semi gloss black.
Assuming that you have belts that fit the pulleys properly, the belts should ride on the inner sides of the pulley and not take the paint off the bottom of the groove. :auto:
