We are making progress with our '64 restoration but I have a question re: the console. This car was a powerglide car and we are installing a 4-speed. Will the PG console accommodate the 4-speed set up?
I appreciate your thoughts before I run off and buy a used 4-speed console.
I've never had an auto C2, but my memory is that the shifter cut out is different. Look at some pictures in magazines or in Noland Adams' book if you have it, paying close attention to the cut out. :auto:
Thanks for the prompt feedback. I have just about every book on C2s but I only looked at the reporduction suppliers like Paragon and Ecklers. My PG console is in very good shape so I do not want to cut it just in case we reinstall the PG someday.
Also, before you start cutting remember that a console runs about $500. I see standard transmission consoles a lot on EBAY. I think I'd look there first before I started cutting on one.
I have a '64 PG car and to the best of my knowledge the PG and 3-4-speed consoles are the same. The consoles for '65-'67 are different as the PG consles had the sliding plastic top boot. The opening in the console for the shift lever is the same shape and size for both applications. The top boot on the '64 is the same as the std shift, except that it has a molded slit instead of the round hole for the std shift lever that the 3-4-speed has. The only difference that I can see is the shift indicator plate.
In '64, the console trim casting was the same for manual and Powerglide (same large cast opening for the shift lever); starting in '65, they were different - manuals had the large opening (like all 64's did), but Powerglides just had a fore-aft slot for the lever.
That's what I was hoping to hear since my console is in very good shape. I'm going to find another '64 to compare before I spend any money on someone else's used 4-speed console.
I think what JohnZ is saying is that in '64 the auto and manual consoles are the same. The only difference being the shift indicator plate. If that is so, turn it over and just remove the auto shift cover and install the 4 speed indicator plate. I larn't sumthin new today.....
Kevin, thanks for the input. I could have easily bought a 4-speed console and then found out they were pysically the same. But the power of this forum helps us all avoid making some mistakes.
