Have had my '64 vert little over year---just want to try and pin down the engine in it-----motor# is V07100RE---casting number is 3070010--it has the intake for SHP 66 or 67-----Valve covers have the flaw---even though I know that does not mean much---thanks in advance Apple

The casting number of the engine block in 64 was 3782870, and they were assembled in my hometown, Flint, and should have an engine number prefex "F".

I'm not sure what you have there that starts with "V", anybody else know?

I did a little more looking and found that in 67 Chevrolet opened a new engine assembly plant that used the "V", but it was followed by only four (4) numbers, not five like yours.

I'll keep on it...

Yeah, light that baby up, cause the casting number should be alot different if it is from a midyear Vette. And give that date code another check as well cuase I'm not finding an RE on anything either.

Just curious, is you VIN number on the block?

Actually, come to think of it, in 64, RE meant it was a 365 HP engine. But it was prefixed with an "F" back then.

3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4

Let's think about this for a minute, the 3970010 block was made from 1969 thru 1975 so it's not a mid year engine to start with. Then in 1970 Chevrolet went to a 3 letter suffix starting with a "C" for passenger cars and a "T" for trucks. So if we look at those numbers again "V07100RE" maybe that last "0" is really a "C", so then the number would be V0710CRE, and that would be a 1970 350/300 hp with an automatic. Thats just a guess, but check it out.

Here is a site that has lots of GM casting numbers. You may want to pull a valve cover and check the head casting number. The block number and head number together may help tell you what you want to know.

Flint V-8-built engines had an "F" prefix from 1955 to 1966; it was changed to "V" at the beginning of the 1967 model year to avoid confusion between Flint V-8 and the Flint Motor Plant, which built six-cylinder engines and also used the "F" prefix. The 3970010 block was used for twelve years ('69-'80) for 350's in all car lines and trucks, in both 2-bolt and 4-bolt configurations. No 3970010 block ever carried an "RE" suffix, but there was a "CRE" suffix used in 1970 for 350/300's, which would be preceded by a "V"and four digits for the month and day.

 This would also be my opinion. By the way, that engine was used in Chevelles, Novas, Camaros, Monte Carlos, and El Caminos but not vettes...
