Default Oil circulation problem

I'm in the process of building up my 327 ('64 block) and started running the oil pump. With the hand drill I can probably get only about 1k rpm. I'm getting a slow dribble out of the left bank of push rods, but nothing out of the right bank.

I'm wondering if perhaps I missed an oil galley plug somewhere. We put three screw-style plugs in the back of the black around the camshaft bore, and three smooth-style plugs in the front of the block, again around the camshaft bore.

What kind of failure could cause oil pressure to reach the left bank and completely fail to reach the left bank? How should I start tracking down the problem?

Many thanks,
-Brian

Do you have a distributor housing in there? The housing seals off the oil passage. It is difficult to get oil up there with a drill alone anyway. I wouldnt worry about it if I had normal pressure at the guage. I think you will find that it will get there with the engine running.

In addition, maybe your drill motor isn't big enough. I use a 1/2" drill and it pull it pretty hard. Rotate your engine a quarter turn at a time while you are priming it.

If you're just using a shaft to turn the oil pump, you won't get any oil to the lifters; you need to use either a modified distributor housing or the correct primer tool with the two raised rings just above the cam gear area in the distributor hole; the housing or correct tool seals and joins across the oil galleries down there and allows oil flow to the lifter oil galleries. Without that area being sealed, oil just flows through the holes in the bore back into the pan instead of pressurizing the lifter oil galleries.

Getting a junk distributor to use as a priming shaft worked perfectly. Now I've gotten oil to all 16 lifters.

Thanks guys,
