bb side pipe header question

..with the big block, the collector seems to be too low by about .5", which is enough to drop the new exhaust pipe below the level of the outer cover..W_T_F??.....the stock exhaust had absolutely no problem
...any advice?...i called hedman and they said they have no complaints on this header (they probably sold one set last year, mine  )...there is absolutely nothing else wrong on this car (btw, it's the passenger side)....if i can't find a solution, i may have to *gasp* install a short length of flexible exhaust pipe to push the pipe "up"
thx

BTW, you think that's bad !, you ought to see the stahl setup, much lower collector, but again, no problem at all, you just fit up the pipe to be centered in the cover, no biggie.
This is a pic of the right side, see how it angles up to fit the cover?.....if it came off perpendicular to the flange it would be at least ~ 2" low

six-T-six....thanks for the help, yeah i might also be doing some "post-installation" adjustments
....the small block bolted right up, i'll be darned - if i would have started with the big block, i probably wouldn't have had the patience to gp tp car #2
thanks again :seeya:

I installed my headers, Then I cut the sidepipes off and left about a 6-8 inch gap between the header flange and the sidepipe. I then bolted the rear of the pipe up and wired the front of the pipe up so it fit under the cover correctly. I did both sides like this and then drove it to the muffler shop ( my ears were ringing when I got there). I let the shop make the connections from header to pipe with me watching on to make sure it all lined up. They did an excelent job. Cost $50. Jeff
Does anyone know who makes them and have a part number for them.
The last time i put headers on this car was back in 1976.
Thanks
Steve
Good luck,
Jeff

Headman -- inexpensive ~120$ retail, fit nice, but only come with 1 3/4" tubes, good for your average bb, but a little small for big cubes &/or really hi RPM use.
Stahl -- expensive ~800$ retail, less ground clearance, tighter under the hood, but they do come in 2" and 2 1/8" tubes sizes.
Most guys go with the Headmans, they provide big gains over the manifolds.
Only you can decide if a few extra horsepower the Stahl's allow (over the Headman's) are worth the additional 680$.
In any case, go with 2 1/2" CORE side pipes (made by stainlessworks, or others), the factory design uses a 1 7/8" core pipe and they are significantly more restrictive than std under car exhaust system (i.e., they kill a BB's breathing ability/performance) .

jeff...the headman PN is 68210 but please check that before ordering...i'll tell 'ya, if i drove to the muffler shop with open headers, by the time i got there, i'd change my mind and just go with a straigth side exit pipe :D....LOVE that sound
I have a 502/502 in a '67 Coupe w/side pipes - originally ran the stock manifolds and pipes - car was choked
Put together an exhaust with Sanderson BB5 headers which have 1 7/8 primaries and 3" collectors - added 3" chambered pipes (2.5" at smallest internal section from Sweet Thunder) and had the connecting pieces made up in 3" - MASSIVE DIFFERENCE IN POWER - Also, exactly the same ground clearance as stock. CHeck the Sanderson site for some tech articles on header length and the impact on torque/power - The shorter primaries move the torque curve up in the RPM range (as opposed to a long tube header) - This works out great for a 502 (and probably most BBs) as you still have tons of low end torque.
And, I did the twenty minute drive to the muffler shop with the open headers (in Long Island - left the house at 7 a.m. so I wouldn't be in traffic)
Have pics if anyone needs 'em - Joe
