Default Front Spindle/knuckle Problems

While taking apart my front end, the driver side came apart fine. When I went to pull the passenger side brake rotor I found the bearings to be stuck to the spindle. I eventually got the outside bearing off but the spindle is in pretty rough shape. The back bearing is still stuck on the spindle. Thinking I may have to replace this spindle I didn't bother taking off the rear bearing. But now I am finding that these spindles aren't too easy to find. Can these be taken to a machine shop to be turned down or am I just stuck now??

I dont see why a good machine shop couldnt do that. I would try to find another, but you could check with machine shops for priceing. Another option would be to change them to later models with the larger bearings. You would need both the spindle and hub.

There are a couple of ways to remove the inner race. One would be to heat the race till it is red and prying off with a couple of pry bars. The other way I used, which I prefer, is to use a die grinder, or Dremel tool, and cut a groove in the race until it is almost through, then I use an old chisel and strike in the groove. It should split which will increase it's inside diameter and it will be able to be removed.
Then I use an old inner race, usually from the other side, and valve grinding compound to seat the race. This will take some time but it saves the spindle.
Every so often stop and clean the spindle with a wet rag and test fit the new bearing. It should fit snug but be able to be removed easily.

Rondog,

All good advice above. When you get the inner race off, besure and check or have the spindles checked for the correct fit of the new bearing/s race/s. If you do decide to step up to the larger bearing/spindle, you will have to go to 68 and up. There is another option, which I did on my 67. I wanted the stock spindles on this car and used ones were hard to find and not that great of shape. Since I live in the town of Boeing Aircraft sub contractors, you can find one of these specially shops to build or re-build just about anything. I found a Boeing sub contractor shop that also does Kenworth truck spindles and would do a SST build up on my spindles for me too, turn em down and do the heat process too. (for proper temper) SWEET!!!! job.......and talk about bearings fitting proper..... :yesnod: :hurray:
Anyway, just keep it in mine, if ya end up looking for these spindles and there is no one in your area to do this process. What I found, when looking at used spindles, was that they weren't much better then what I already had. To get new bearings to fit PROPER (correct tolerance between race and spindle) I would of had to have this process done anyway, plus the cost of the used spindles, not :cool:
Anyway, just handy info for all would be spindle shoppers.

Thanks for the tips!! I ended up ordering a spindle from Corvette Central. $132.00. I found others priced from $150.00 to $250.00. Hope it turns out alright. Will have to wait and see. Ordered all new bearings and seals for both sides also.
