I started to assemble my steering column and the steering shaft is too short. I think the pins are broken and it appears a couple inches to short. Now, it was fine when it came apart, so I must have busted it myself. I have visions of how I removed the lower bearing running through my head. Oh well, not the dummest thing I ever did.
Does anyone know the proper length? Anyone know where I might get it fixed? Anyone ever run into this before?

I'm not sure from your description what your problem may be, but keep in mind that the 67 is the only one of the midyears with a collapsing column. Hope you haven't inadvertently collapsed something. :auto:

Thats it. the shaft is now too short for the column tube. The upper part of the shaft slips into the lower part and has two small pins to keep it from sliding. I think they are broken and the shaft is collapsed a couple inches.

If I recall when I had mine apart, there is a pin that keeps the two pieces from comming apart. So you need to put one end in a vice and pull on the other end to extend it. It shouldn't come apart.
anyone know if you could retrofit a 67 steering column in a 64 and how much it would cost? I'm doing the 3point belts so the steering column makes sense too if the price isnt too outrageous.
Talk to Jim Shea on the C-3 forum. He's a retired Saginaw steering guy. Very knowledgeable about C-2 and C-3 steering-and very helpful.

The '67 column is unique- the '68 is very similar, but the mount is different.
67 was the first year for collapsible columns, and the mounting bracket is a large 3 point welded assembly- not the simple U-bolt.

Thanks for the info!! I did a search on Jim Shea and got tons of hits but the search engine doesn't display the posts, so I couldn't look at them. Thought someone might have done this before. I put up a new post on the C3 forum.
I need to know if I can just pull the two sections of the shaft apart, clean out the old broken pins, slip it back together and re-pin it. Always something!!!

You put me on the right track. Jim sent me the dimensions I needed and gave me the info I needed to reset the length of my steering shaft. Thanks!!!!
