Default Engine code markings on block

As I was cleaning up my block I found these markings - it wasn't until I flipped the engine over that it made sense. The stamp pad shows HC and the markings on the side of the block must have been an assembly line marking.

This is a 1967 3892657 327 block

It looks like the block has never been tanked.

I thought this was interesting and through I'd share the pictures.

Brian

It may be supposed to be an "HO". That would denote 327/300 Auto Transmission. Don't see an "HC" code listed. :auto:

it isn't supposed to be listed. ;) I think that's interesting stuff allcoupedup, another thing to look for for those of us with non-molested original GM equip engines of the period. like looking for the job number scrawled in crayon on the dash support.

My information shows the HC to denote a '67 327 with a powerglide transmission.

Brings back memories. My 67, 327 had “HE” scribbled on the side with a big yellow grease pencil.

Try this again. I guess the forum doesn't like double quotes.

"HC" was a '66-'68 passenger car 275hp Powerglide. The suffix code was scrawled on the side of the block at the beginning of the engine assembly line (while it was upside down) so the guys down the line would know what innards to put in it, and it also told the code-stamper guy which gang-stamp holder to grab and whack with his hammer.
