Need help - installing spin-on filter
Does this piece have to come out to get on my adaptor ?
It does not fit with this in place.
Directions do not specify removing this. I think this is the bypass ?
This is for my '65 coupe.
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (Electron Blue '02)
Yep, it comes out. There are lots of kits out there, AC made one that uses a Chevy oil filter. The other brands have been know to use the F word filter.
Any reason you are switching from the can to a spin-on???
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (Electron Blue '02)
Why swap? I think the old-style cartridge filter is more convenient that the new spin-on's. Plus, Wix cartridge filters are readily available at NAPA (don't use the new replacement PF-141's--they are junk).

I like the old style better. sometime the spins ons get stuck. I never had a problem with the old style.

:iagree: Gotta agree with the Magic. Besides, the conversion is simple one way or the other, and, for me, the convenience of a spin-on anywhere on the road overwhelms the 'correctness". The canister is in the parts box....along with the correct shifter, correct numbered holly carb, the correct numbered distributor, et al. ad nauseum....for the next caretaker upon my demise or lack of interest......

I got a $2.95 aluminum socket for a 3/8 drive that fits the filter 12 point to take it right off.
You can easily fill a spin on befoire installing it - so the engine doesn't run dry till the pump fills the filter.
Spin on filters are every where when you need a quick oil change on a long ride. Try a cartridge at your quick lube without calling first.
Back in the 1980s I took a 2-month trip in a scout diesel that took oddball filters. I brought a half dozen with me and never had a problem. I have seen a lot of threads on this forum about stuck spin ons. People have had to poke a hole through the filter and stick a screwdriver through the hole to get it off. If I were to change the filter I would get a kit that allows you to relocate the filter to a different place in the engine compartment for easy access.
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (Electron Blue '02)
...i'm afraid i disagree with the advice given here...if you do not leave the cast bypass valve assembly in the block, you will not pump oil through the filter...i could dig up a reference eventually but the one place i remember seeing this warning is in a book that was reviewed on this site a while ago - something with the title of "building chevy rat motors"
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (Kid_Again)
The cast by-pass checks off the oil when pressure and flow get high, so in other words it stops the filter process when demand is high. You can block the by-pass and all the oil will be filtered, but the stock filter can't handle the flow. GM makes a 2 quart spin on filter, AC932 that can handle the flow.
The AC adapter has a by-pass valve built in. I'm not sure some of the others have a by-pass.
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (Electron Blue '02)
Blkbelt - agree - let the next owner have the "fun" of canister filters and carbs that leak.
2agr - "2 months in International scout" - hahaha - a vehicle with more room behind the back seat than a Corvette has behind the front seat. If I took oil filters, I would have to leave my suitcase.
Anyone with a filter that they can't easily remove does not have a filter socket to fit the 12 point end. Why struggle?
PS The pressure relief valve relies on the driver to watch the oil pressure guage while the car is cold. Keep the revs down until the temp rises and the pressure falls. If the pressure never falls to at least 30-40, you have the wrong oil pump. High pressure oil pumps are not needed on the street.

The scout was bigger than the Jeep wrangler that I owned, it had quite a bit of room in it. I can't say for sure but if my memory is correct it may have had more room in it than my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and, it was a real workhorse. I spent 2 months traveling cross-country in it and living in and towing a 17 foot trailer. I had filter and a set of tools with me to take care of any roadside emergencies.
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (Electron Blue '02)
NO, DO NOT remove it......... if you do, your oil will bypass the filter, and you'll be running all kinds of poope thru your bearings. This is a common mistake made by many that do the conversion.
I personally would leave it stock, the can setup is much better in my book!.... you don't have to worry about it bursting, it has more filter area, it can easily be filled before you install it on the car (I've did it for 30 years).
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (66427-450)
66427-450...that was my recollection so thanks for the follow-up
BTW, i would NOT use the 2 qt oil filter with the spin-on adapter becuase that is one LONG and HEAVY filter, it wobbles and causes the gasket next to the block to leak oil...i've gone back to the standard size (ph13s??)

Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (66427-450)
NO, DO NOT remove it......... Good luck - :)
The problem I encountered was that the thread to hold the spin-on
filter in place on the adaptor was inserted on the wrong side.
My friend (GrandSportC3) noticed this, and then everything went
on smoothly. I DID NOT remove the bypass.
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (Electron Blue '02)
Electron Blue 02....When I installed my spin-on I too encountered the same problem you did....HOWEVER, IF I remember correctly, the reason I removed the by-pass was because the bolts were not long enough that came with the spin-on to place the adaptor on top of the by-pass  Did you have this problem?
Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (67wave_saver)
I doubt one of these baby's would ever show up on ebay. Anybody remember those Frantz 'toilet paper' oil filter set up's .. ? .. Maybe ya' gotta be kind of an OLD guy ..

Re: Need help - installing spin-on filter (Electron Blue '02)
The most common spin-on filter on the planet is Fram PH8A, you can find it literally in every parts store anywhere, fits hundreds of cars from a 68 Datsun on up, and it's what goes on a Vette spin-on adapter. Cheap, easy to put on, and it's everywhere --- What's not to like?
BTW I never had a spin-on filter stick. Sounds like overtightening. I use a marker to make a line every 90 degrees around the filter, then I can spin it on for 3/4 to 1.0 turn with certainty, so it's never too tight.
