While rebuilding my '56 I ran into the need for some bearings. I needed rear axle bearings and the two bearings in the 3 speed transmission. I looked at a number of sourses like Corvette vendors, the local NAPA store and then an industrail bearing supplier. The industrail bearing supplier killed everyone else on price  .
The rear axle bearings were $35 each, the best I saw any where else was $45. The transmission bearings were right around $30 each. The only listing I found was $139 for the front bearing and I couldn't even find a listing for the rear bearing.
Here's the trick: Press the old bearings off and take them to the bearing supplier. Each bearing has a manufactures identification and a part number. With this information any bearing guy worth a hoot can hook you up!
Just for reference here's the part numbers for the bearings I got:
'56 rear axle bearings BCA RW507E
'56 3 speed transmission front bearing SKF 207-2ZNR
'56 3 speed transmission rear bearing SKF 306-2Z

I've been doing just that for many years. Once in a while you will run up on purpose built bearings that the industrial supply house can't match, but most are common hardware. :auto:
You almost always get a better deal from a industrial supply house. Ball bearings, taper roller bearings, plain bushings (bronze or plastic), 'O' rings, shaft seals, 'V' belts etc. Plus they have interchange books.

I found the same thing when I needed an outer half shaft u-joint flange. A local industrial drive line specialties shop had the part for about half price. :)

Many years ago I ruined the crankshaft main roller bearings on my dirt bike. They were like $45 each at the Yamaha shop. I stopped by my friends Volkswagen shop to show them to him. He says "hey, wait a minute", goes to his parts bin and pulls out two Volkswagen rear axle bearings. Exactly the same bearing. Cost......$3.50 each. He gets his from the local bearing supply store, I do now also.
