I just got my Cluster back from Corvette Specialties of MD and am just about ready to tackle the reinstallation. Before I started I thought I might ask if anyone has any words of wisdom or tricks to help make this as easy and painless as possible. By the way, Corvette Specialties did a great job, but I now understand why they get your credit card number before they start work. $$$$
As someone suggested to me, get some threaded rod from Home Depot, Lowes or other (I Think it's 1/4x20) and make up a few 6-7" length pieces. SCrew these in where the gauge cluster screws go. Set the cluster on them but leaving it out a couple of inches giving you room to get behind and hook everything up. When done, push the cluster in and then pull the threaded rod out one-by-one and then replace with the correct screws.
Take your time, double check everything, and good luck!
This article may be useful. I have new gauges and may attempt the same job in May or so after the sun warms up a bit. But the job does look intimidating! http://www.adirondackncrs.com/cluster.html
78 vette is right on. Buy a $3 piece of threded rod cut it into pieces and hang the cluster off it while doing your wiring. I also assume you have taken out the steering column, if not I highly reccomend it
Thanks for the tips. I'll pick up some threaded rod at Lowes on the way home after work so I can get started. With any luck and weather permitting I should be on the road this weekend.
Thanks for posting that link to the gage cluster article. I am about to do it myself and have heard all the scary stories. I'm sure it will come in handy.
