L89 project update - 427 or 454?
I finally got my block and L89 heads over to the engine builder on Sat. He and I have been talking for several weeks about the build, and originally he was thinking of keeping the 454 crank in it, and building it from there. Our most recent conversation on Sat has him thinking of something different. He suggested internally balancing it and building a 427 instead. This will mean changing the crank and several other items. The crank I can sell, so no biggie.
What do you guys think? Since I am building the car as an L89 clone, why not, right? Opinions, thoughts???
Thanks,
Rob

With the same cam, inlet system, exhaust system, heads - everything the same except stroke, a 454 and 427 will make about the same peak power, BUT the 454 will do so about 500 revs lower, AND it will make more power across the rev range because of the greater torque at all points. At the same time the 454 will have about a 500 rev lower peak useable operating range, but your valvetrain will appreciate it.
I cannot imagine any reason to destroke a 454 to 427 unless you are racing in a class that has a seven liter displacment limit.

There isn't any mechanical advantage and visually the difference is minimal so if it was me, I'd go with the 454. Wait a sec, I did go with the 454.

Almost, except the 27 will out RPM the 54 if its necessary. a Plus on the 54 is the rod angle.

Size does make a difference, and bigger is better, so....... :smash:
