Hi guys; My 4 speed grinds going into third , when it's cold. Actually i can't get into third gear before driving 10 -20 miles, so I'm going to pull it for a rebuild.
Is there anything I should be looking out for when I drop it? Anything else to replace while it's out? I assume all rebuilds are the same , is there a difference??
I'm a backyard/ half - butt mechanic , I assume i can remove / reinstall this tranny without too much trouble . Any insight will be appreciated.
You will need to tilt the nose up to the pass side to get it out once you have pushed it as far back as it will go. The cross member does not come out so it ain't as easy as one thinks it will be.
I thought the same as you on my 66 327/350. But I learned quickly it would not drop out. I had to turn the tranny sideways and unbolt the shifter mounting plate from the tranny. Once I did this it allowed me to move the tranny back an additional inch or so that I needed. Good Luck!!
Doesn't come out as easy as you would think. If you have to remove your shifter mounting plate (i did) make sure you note which holes the set screws were in ( i didn't). There are several choices, and if you can't remember which ones you will waste a lot of time trying to figure out why the shifter doesn't fit anymore :D .
Also if you have never done one before I would recommend getting the "how to rebuild your Muncie" video.
I assume there's no real difference between 64 & 65, it's really a piece of cake, just make sure you replace all syncros when it's out. And use some heavy grease to hold in those needle bearings, I had to re-pull the trany because of one of those suckers.Muncies are easy.Good luck. :seeya
