While replacing my W/S I loosened the Wiper transmisions. When I replaced
them the cables are loose. The wipers work. But I am going on my first trip
(250 miles one way)in the car this weekend and rain is in the forcast. Should I do something to tighten the cables? What?
Yes!! don't try to operate them with loose cables. If the transmissions are working properly, and most don't unless they have been rebuilt, you can depress the shaft from outside the car. This should release the inner pulley and tighten the cables by spring action. If that doesn't work, bring the car by the shop and let me look at it before you do anything else. That system is fragile and you can do a lot of damage if you aren't familiar with it.
Call me if you have questions,

When you reinstalled the transmissions, did you remember that the cable is crossed on the right hand side? That would defiantely cause a loose cable situation. :auto:
I thought I crossed it. I will try to push in on the post and see if it tightens up.
I was trying to make the LA trip this weekend. Not sure I will have time to come by. But if This will not fix it I will call you.
When you push in, the shaft ought to move about a quarter inch in and then spring back when released. You don't necessarily have to remove the wiper arm. :auto:
They are frozen up. I will have to remove them but that will have to wait untile after the Gulf Shores trip. It looks like the rain will come after noon Friday. I should be there by then. The wipers do work and I will add RAIN X
to my new w/s.I have relatives that live along the route if I have problems.
