I'm rebuilding the front end and now that I have it going back together today I had some time to think about the cross shafts.. I got to wondering if I had mine in right with the offset inward. As always your help is greatly appreciated. Dave..
Most of the time, the front crossmember sags in the middle, and then you need to add a bunch of shims to obtain the proper camber/caster. If you need more shims than can be installed, then the offset cross shaft is used with the offset inward (to push the top of the wheel outward).
However, if the offset cross shaft was installed for "another" reason, such as frame damage, then anybodies guess which way it should go back in.
At least that is how I remember it (been awhile since I added one to my 70 Vette due to cross member sag).
Plasticman, I think that I have them installed as they were then, with the offset inward so that it moves the top of the tire outward. I'll post a pic in a little while.
bondtimbond, I think someone in another thread had the same question and someone said that you can get the offset shafts from any auto parts store. If not I'm sure ZIP or LIC would have them.. Dave.
The offset A arm shafts are 1/4 inch offset to add sagging frames.
