Now that I have my new restorarion radiator from Tom Dewitt, I come to the experts with a question about installing it. :D My car is a 67 coupe with 327, 4spd and no a/c. Does the hood need to be removed for this job? Looking at it, it seems that the hood would not need to be removed, but I hate to be half way through and then realize that it does. for those of you who have done this how easy/difficult is this project? It looks pretty straight forward to me, but I always say that just before I run into trouble.
Thanks for your help.
Haven't done it in a long time, but my recollection is:
drain radiator
remove the hoses
remove the fan & fan clutch
remove the fan shroud
tape the radiator core face with heavy cardboard to avoid damage
carefully remove the radiator
Removing the hood would make it easier to lift the radiator out (may require 2 people to lift it out if hood is still on, since you have to work from the sides) but not an essential step.
Not too long ago there was a topic where folks sort of wieghed in and voted as to whether the hood had to come off or should come off for the rad-swap task. (I have had mine in and out a few times, never took the hood off, if you care how I voted).
Tallying the votes seemd to conclude that most did not think the hood coming off was at all nec, esp considering the two man job that required, But it was not a landslide. The thread also had plenty of advice on how to dot he job from all who have gone before you.
Absolutely not, the hood does NOT have to come off to remove/replace the radiator. Those that remove the hood do so only in order to make it easier to lift it straight out from the front of the car. Therefore, the choice is yours.
I of course agree, but I was trying to be fair and admit to another view. Plus, that thread had good advice on the steps folks took wehn doing the job, hood on or off . . . .
Thanks for your replies folks. I'm glad to hear hood doesn't have to come off. Mine fits real nice now and would hate to mess that up.
ctjackster,
would you know how I might be able to retrieve that topic, would like to hear about how others did this project. Maybe some helpful hints. Thanks.
