Default Caged Nuts, C-1 Door Hinge

One of the caged nuts in a door hinge assembly of my 62 is able to spin...but I can't see any reasonable way to replace it. I can see from the AIM that the nut's cage is riveted...but does the hinge assembly have to come all the way out of the door pillar (in the body, not the door) to drill out the old rivets and install new? (The rivets appear to be right under the stamped "C" piece that the two large screws go through in the pillar...but that C" piece appears to be spot welded to the hinge assembly.)

Any sage words from anyone who's replaced one of these?

TIA.

I believe that if you pull your interior side kick panels out you can get at the back side of the hinge pillars from the inside. I can't remember if they are caged nuts or just tapped reinforcing plates, but you should be able to see once you pull the panels. Good luck.

Just took mine apart. It is a caged nut. You can get to them by removing the kick panel. Once removed you can get at the nut to either hold it in place and run a thread chaser through it or replace it with a new nut.

Thx for the replies, K2 and 71zman.

Last time I had the RH kick panel off, I did take a look to see what might be done from there, but didn't go all the way to attemtp repair at that time.

The nut in question is cleanly threaded--it just spins when a screw is almost snug. I expect that the 'caging' mechanism has gone south, which is why I planned to replace the cage/nut assembly. According to the AIM drawing, the rivet heads go in from the door side, under the "C" piece, and are peened on the back (kick panel) side.

If the tabs on the cage can be bent while the assembly is in place, it shouldn't be too hard to pop in another nut (a square one, I expect). If not....hmmmmm.

Will need to pull the packge tray next week for carpeting replacement, so I'll pull the kick panel at the same time and give repair a go.

Thx for the advice.

CC has the cage. I just use screws instead of rivits. They get covered by the plate.
