Default Complete Engine Weight

What is the weight of a Small Block Engine 327/300hp, complete with heads, exhaust man., and any accessories? Figure all iron, not aluminum heads.

What about a Big Block.

Just trying to get an idea of an engine stand to purchase.

Thanks
Ryan

Ryan,
Having just done this myself I was suprised by the stress the engine puts on a stand. Whatever you do, do NOT pick one that is rated at the same weight as the engine. In other words do not put a 1000 LB engine on a 1000LB stand - when you see the stand flex under load you'll know what I'm talking about!!

Even my little 327 small block kind of "bounces" on my 1000 lb engine stand.

Here are my estimates based on the highly scientific "compared to a 50 lb brine block" test

Heads: 80
crank: 40
rods and pistons: 30
cam: 10
exhaust: 20
block: 150

just a guess compared to heaving those damn salt blocks!

That's kind of what I was worried about. Just looking at the stands, the 2000lb capacity stand looks better (Local Harbor Freight). It has a wider base and additional support for the mount the engine is attached to.

Ryan,
I have the 1000LB stand from HF and It is just fine for my SB. I would not put a big block on it though. One more comment about the HF strand - may apply to all stands - when the engine is fully loaded it very difficult to rotate the engine on the stand.

The molded plastic drip pan that fits between the legs of the stand is well worth it - contains all the dribbling oil, etc. so it doesn't pool on the floor.

I have both the 1000# and 2000# Harbor Freight engine stands. I have fully loaded, all iron BBC engines on both. I definitely prefer the small, 1000# stand. It actually rotates easier than the larger stand, although I use a cheater bar with both. The smaller stand takes-up less space and is easier to manuever in the garage.

I picked-up my 496 from Speed-O-Motive two weeks ago, and asked if they could recommend a stand. They recommended the blue, Goodyear stands from Costco. BTW, I also agree with the above recommendation for the drip pan. HTH
