I'm looking at buying a '67 convertible from a guy in Newport Beach. He has a driver engine installed in the car, and the "original" engine stored separately. The numbers on the stored engine are:
7112961 VO22HT
... the "7112961" is not on the list of numbers I have for any '67 dated 327 block, nor can I find it listed on any manufacturing date list. Does anyone know when this block may have been manufactured? Thanks for any info.
Not really enough info there to tell (casting number and casting date code off the top of the block's bellhousing flange would help). Most of the stamped number is consistent with a 350hp/4-speed Corvette block for vehicle serial 194677S112961, which would have been built in early March 1967..... but I think the "O22" part of the VO22HT should be a (m)mdd code for the month and day of assembly... I don't think mm(d)d was a valid sequence... so this is very close, but doesn't quite make sense for a Corvette. Could you (or the seller) have transposed the numbers "O22", or left a number out?
The only other reference for an "HT" code I found was for a 69 full-size Chevy 350ci 255hp engine, but the starting "7" doesn't jive with that, either. Perhaps you should ask the seller to reverify the stamped number.
If the VIN # of the car is 194377S112961--coupe or 194677S112961--roadster you may have the original engine. 7112961=engine in 67 Corvette #12961 V022HT=engine build date however i think it is missing a number, should be one more number before HT,that would indicate that the engine was assembled the last week of Feb.67,for example V0226HT which would decode as Feb.26, HT=the code for 67 Corvette engine 327CI/350HP with manual trans. Check the block casting number found on the back top on the drivers side,it must be 3892657 and the block casting date found on the back top passenger side, this should start with the letter B for Feb. as an example B216 which would decode a Feb.16,the block castings numbers are large and easy to see,the block date numbers are quite small and one usually needs a flashlight see really see them, however with the fact that the engine is out of the car both numbers should be very easy to see. 67 Corvette #12961 was built in the early part of March so a engine block casting and build date in the last half of Feb. are perfect dates for this car. If all these numbers and dates check out then i think you have the original engine to 67 Corvette #12961. Hope this helps Tom
John You are absolutely correct,i was typing so fast i just flat out "screwed-up" My fingers were working faster then my brain. The correct example for this engine would have been B217=Feb.21,1967
