Default Block and journal question

Car is a 64 NOM. The block is on a stand but still mostly together. Block is a 3858174, found this number on drivers side top near bell housing, and I think cast C 29 6, found on passenger side in same place.

Some facts:
The heads have 1966 casting dates.
3858174 is generally considered to be a 1966-7 unit.
My pad stamp is F04I2HCH, thats all.

Questions:
Exactly where should I find the block casting date?
If this is a 66-7 crank in this 66-7 block will it be the large or small journal?
Isn't it most likely a 2-bolt main?

You should have crank shaft part #4577 - forged steel and small journal. The block casting date should be visible in the same area as the block casting #. I'm pretty sure all 327 blocks were two bolt main.

Wish I had some pictures but I don't!

There are no other numbers near my casting number 3858174. I thought I read once the casting date might be obscured by the starter, but I have a date near the top close to the bellhousing on the passenger side, just like but opposite of the casting number.

That's it - the casting date is on the opposite side of the bellhousing flange from the casting number. That engine has a small-journal crank, and has 2-bolt main caps; GM never built a 4-bolt small-journal 327, although many were converted by machine shops. HCH was a '66 327/275hp Powerglide out of a passenger car.

Thank you sir. Do you agree with Allcoupedup on the crank part number?

John, another question. My stamp pad has no VIN. Could this mean this engine came from GM when someone replaced the original engine or would it not have had a VIN if it came from a donor passenger car?

There were three or four different small-journal 327 cranks (all were forged steel); the 2680 was used from '62-'65, the 4577 from '66-'67, and one or two others for service; all are interchangeable (although not all are drilled for a balancer bolt), and most of them destined for SHP usage had the bearing journals Tufftrided for durability.

It's more likely it came out of a passenger car. I think the convention of having the VIN derivative stamped only on passenger car engines of 300hp or more was still in effect in 1966 (all Corvettes had it starting in 1960).

So most likely I will never know if this engine was new or used when it was installed. You think?

Since it was built to a passenger car configuration, you can be pretty sure that's where it came from.
