Default Replaced the temp sender

Yep I know should have found a Wells TU5 in the first place and yes the one that I got from NAPA was reading extremely high.. My question tonight is I thought when I pulled the temp sender that I would have a fountian of Green stuff but actually it was a no fuss no mess ordeal... Is that normal? I thought due to location is would gush out?? Or is it b/c the thermostat is closed and will not let the system equalize and that is why I didn't have a gusher.. Just wondering... Dave..

Even though it is not at the highest point in the cooling system, it still is a closed system so there is no reason for it to gush out (although some would be expected to dribble out) especially since there is no way for any replacement air to make up for the coolant that would be come out. Now, if you WANT to see it gush out, open up the radiator/expansion tank cap before you remove the sending unit... :yesnod:

If you are saying no coolant flowed out at all when you removed the thermostat housing then that means that everything higher than that had air in it. Such as the housing, the upper radiator hose and probably a few top rows of your radiator. That is something you do not want. When you fill the system this time open the heater and be sure you get the system at least to the surge tank mark.

Sounds as though your coolant level is a little low. Could you see coolant in the manifold when you had the sender out? I would suspect you have a little air trapped in the sustem and probably need to top it off again. If you get too much coolant in the system it will self correct by puking the excess.

fuelie, I just filled this motor the other day before starting it so I suspect that I still have a little air in it. However the liquid was right up to the bottom of the threads in the intake. I just haven't had a chance to start her since Saturday.. Honey do projects and all... I wanted to change the sensor and hit it with a temp gun before driving to much... Dave...

It's not unusual to have to fill one two or three times to vent all the air out. Seems like some brands of thermostats have a vent hole to help the process. You might check the archives if the problem persists. :steering:

Doesn't matter if the heater is on or not - there's no valve in a C2 heater like there is in a C1 - coolant flows through the heater core all the time whether the heater control is pulled or not. Run it at normal operating temperature for a few minutes with the expansion tank cap off so it can purge any air in the system, then top it off to the half-full mark on the tank after it cools down.

Just an update. I ran it tonight and image that with a Wells TU5 it read at 180 for most of the time then a little higher maybe almost to 210 when I let it idle for 10 minutes in the driveway... Dave..

Sounds like the fan-clutch is set for a higher temp or a water pump problem.
