Default Timing

Here's my problem. Went to set my timing the other day. Blocked off the vacume advance and set the timing at 8 degrees. Rehooked up the vacume line to the distributor and the timing jumped to 12 degrees. Tried a couple of times to reset but the same thing keeps happening. The distributor was rebuilt and the vacume can was replaced.
Ideas??

That's the way it's supposed to work and the reason that timing should be set with the vacuum advance disconnected.

Am surprised that it only jumped 4 degrees. I wanted at least 8 degrees out of mine at idle, so got a different advance can. Works great.

Which engine? Stock or modified? What's the vacuum can number and specs?
What are the OE vacuum can number and specs.

Typically mid-year engine vacuum cans should add about 16 degrees to the initial timing at idle speed.

Engine is a stock 350 out of a 1978 Chevy Malibu.
Distributor is tack drive Corvette, year unknown.
Vacuum advance was ordered from CC for a 250 hp 327
Trying to get the car to run cooler. New radiator, water pump, belts, after market 6 blade fan. New sending unit and autometer gauge. Runs 200-210 city or open road.

"Rehooked up the vacuum line to the distributor and the timing jumped to 12 degrees."

The timing should have jumped to around 20 or 22 degrees.

If your vacuum can is adding only 4* at idle, you may need a different module.

Are you running ported of full manifold vacuum to the dist?

What carb do you have?

Intake is a duel plane Edelbrock with a 600/625 cfm Edelbrock carb. Not sure of the exact cfm.
