3.08s bye bye, putting 3.73 gears in my 66 B/B, a few questions........
My 66 BB turns 13.3 in the 1/4 mile with 308 rear gears, finally decided to put in 373s (please dont suggest 411) my Vette is for cruising ......the 308 rear = 80 MPH(my cruising speed) @ 3,000 rpm, with 26 " tires, Question what rpm is 70 mph ( new cruising speed) 373 ??. figure thet driving my old vette is fun & the 373 will be xtra fun.......... :seeya anybody out ther want to swap 308 for 373 carriers ??? :auto: :seeya :auto:

Straydog,
You will be at about 3000 rpms at 70. 75 will be up around 3500 rpms. I have 3.73s and a cruise for an hour or two at those speeds is certainly tolerable. But the low end is great! Good luck.

Good for you !
26" tires, 3.70's..... 3000 revs = 62MPH. the very short tires make a significant difference (almost as good as 4.11's with std heigth tires :)

Who to get complete 373 carrier from, in exchange for my 308 ??????????????????? :seeya
Have you considered just changing out your 3.08 gears for 3.70's??? that's what i'd do (but i'd install 3.90's  ), and freshen up your posi unit while it's out, ............add bearings and seals and your 100% fresh.

StayDog,
Boy, are you going to increase the fun factor running around town (and at the strip). I took nearly a 1/2 second off my quarter miles times swapping out a 3.36:1 OPEN rear (still have her) to a 3.70:1 Posi. :jester Down the road I may want to convert that OPEN 3.36:1 to a Posi and freshen her up in the process.
Keep us posted on your swap and results.

I have a 3.70 diff for sale if you're interested. It's for a '66 427 car. No axles though. Let me know...

I may be wrong here, but when I replaced my 3:36:1 ring and pinion for a set of 3:73:1 I did'nt need a different carrier. I was told if I had jumped up to 4:11:1 then I would need the different carrier...I'm sure someone will chime in to straighten it out.
That gear ratio is fine around town, but isnt much for highway cruizing with a 4 speed. Needs that 5th gear or overdrive.
But the camshaft profile dictated that I stop lugging it and use at least the 3:73:1...Mid to low 12's is the norm now. Good Luck Drive it like ya stole it.

How do you identify what gear ratio and carrier series you have? I am almost certain I have 411's in my 67' but would like to take it down to 3:73 or 3:7. It would be nice to keep up with the semis on the freeway.
