i was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem i have, i have just recently bought a 63 corvette, i have a 3.36 posi rear in the car now that has 65 corvette writing on it. i went to buy a set of 4.56 gears for the car and the guy asked me how many splines does my pinion have. i told him 30 and he told me that gears for a 63 will not fit in that rear. can anyone tell me if there is something different between a 65 and 63 differential. also does anyone know where i could get a set of 4.56 or 4.33 gears for that diff...thankyou and i appreciate any help.

first off, if you have a 65 rear end odds are it has an Eaton posi unit, that's good, i think the 63's had a... dana?
second, understand that there are "3 series" posi units (for 3.08 - 3.90 gears, and 4 series posi units for 4.11 on up. you can use spacers etc, but i'd recommend getting a 4 series posi unit if thats what you want.
check with these guys, they'll fix you up.
also is there anyway telling that this rear is a 65. someone wrote on it 65 corvette in yellow paint. also how can you tell the eaton from the dana carrier. thanks for the reply
The original ratio and date codes are stamped on the bottom surface of the diff housing, between the spring mount pad and the camber strut bracket, and the casting date for the housing is on the driver's side, just above the edge of the camber strut bracket. Post those and we can tell you what the diff is (or was originally). '63-'64 diffs had 17-tooth pinions, and '65-up had 30-tooth pinions.
It's highly unlikely that the Dana posi unit is still in any '63-'64 diff; most of them failed early in their life and were replaced by the later Eaton units.
Ive got a 63 that came with a later model 5 to 1 rear end. Thats a little higher than 456 but I cant tell you how much that gear ratio sucked. No top speed, loud winding motor just trying to keep up with traffic on the highway. I think it was someones idea for drag racing in the 70s?
those rear ends are pretty interchangable, i just bought a used 336 and replaced the seals and popped 'er in. mine's a hot rod, so im not too worried about absolute correctness. anyway, all those rear ends have code #'s on the outer case that will tell you what it is.
btw, i couldnt give away the the old rear end, it is probable serving someone as a boat anchor at this point.
Good luck...
