C-2 Engine ID

My friend just bought a 66 Conv. and it doesn't have the original engine.
Is there anyway by using the vin or trim tag to determine what engine was originally installed it his car?

NO! look at tach redline, evidence of rear sway bar, auto or straight shift, etc.

:nonod: Not definitely. Even if you look at "other" items on the car (tach, etc.) who's to say they are original to the car (afterall the car is almost 40 years old)? Unfortuntely for your friend, the only true means to determine the original engine characteristics is through documentation... :thumbs:
