Default Power window problem on a 65

My driver side window powers up but doesn't come down. The connector on the bottom of the window motor has two leads. There's one black & white wire that connects to the top of the motor. How do you connect a volt meter to see if there's voltage present when the switch is activated? Also, is the regulator spring compressed when the window is up or down. I would appreciate any help out there.

I'm not sure of the answer to your question, but be certain to check out your switch also. Don't know if yours is the same as my 64, but I can tell you that 100% of my power window problems have been with the console switch. The problem of " it goes up but not down or vice versa " is a common one.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know where I can find a schematic of the switch?
Also, what about the window regulator spring? Should the spring be compressed when the window is up or down?

Let me see if I can help. The spring should be compressed when the window is down. It compensates for the weight of the glass to take most of the load off the motor. The black wire that goes to the top of the motor is the electrical ground. The two wires in the connector at the bottom are hot - one for going up and one when going down. Unplug the connector and check these with a voltmeter (positive on one wire at a time in the connector) - use any convenient ground for the negative. You should have voltage on one connector in when the up switch is pushed, and on the other in the down position. If you lack voltage at either connector, chase the wiring back to the switch. Be sure to check where the wires come out of the conduit on the door - lot of flexing & stress right there. Good luck.

Thanks for the response. The wiring diagram I have doesn't illustrate the power window circuit, so this is just what I needed. I'll let everyone know what I find after another weekend inside this monster. Thanks again.

I received all of my door parts last weekend. After pulling everything apart my problem turned out to be 40 year old wiring at the door jam. Good news is my window motor and window switch are fine. But everything else inside the door had to go. I rebuilt everything I could, rear liner, front sleeve insert, all bumper stops, new vent weather stripping and yes the window wiring harness. The best part is now it looks new and works even better. Thanks again to JPatrick and Firemist 1. Now on to the air conditioning. This should be fun.
