Default Rusty Oil Pan

I just received the right oil pan for my 65 Corvette Convertible 327/350.

It has a bit of rust on the inside of it. What would be the best way to remove the rust?

I know that beads from beadblasting could get stuck inside the baffle and then come out when it heats up on the engine and in turn get into the oil.

Thanks in advance for any help!

If you have a high-speed 4" or 4.5" grinder, you can get a wire brush head for it at home depot or Lowes. They do almost as good a job as blasting. But wear eye protection - those bristles do fly off.

If you don't have one and can wait til the 19th, I'll bring mine up.

Forget about removing the rust by mechanical means... You won't get it all anyway.

Go buy some muratic acid. This stuff is usually available at a tractor supply, hardware or concrete supply house for $3 a gallon. It will remove rust easily but.... You need to be careful with it!

Pour a couple cups in your pan and scrub around with a paint brush. When you are done, pour the stuff back in the jug and cap it tightly.

Now dissolve a half a box of Arm & Hammer baking soda in a gallon of water and use this mixture to rinse out your pan. Follow up with plain water.

The soda water will neutralize the remaining acid and is very important. Otherwise your nice clean metal will glaze over with another coat of surface rust very quickly.

Do this procedure outside away from anything you do not want to rust. The vapors off the stuff are caustic and will cause problems for you. Do not breathe them either!

Most importantly, wear eye protection and rubber gloves. Rinse any acid off your skin immediately with soda water.

I know this all sounds like more trouble than it's worth, but after you see the result you will not believe it. I keep a five gallon bucket of the stuff around to clean up all kinds of small parts. It's beats the heck outta bead blasting and you can do the whole process in 10 minutes once you get your act together.

good Luck!

Don't know about paint, but it is used to remove rust stains from concrete, and attacks metal with a vengence (don't put it in a metal container!). Also used to adjust the PH in swimming pools. Should be available at your local hardware store.

Note that when he says wear eye protection, he means full eye protection with the side/top/bottom protection (not just glasses).

Nope, If you need to remove paint, go buy some aircraft grade paint stripper at your paint store or automotive supply house. About $25 a gallon, but well worth it and safe for aluminum too.

If you are stripping fiberglass, get some Capt'n Lee's from one of the Corvette parts houses.
