My ’56 is not handling as good as I think it should. The tie rods ends were changed, I have radials and had it aligned to radial specs twice. I suspect there may be something wrong with the front end, ie: king pin, bushings, bearings or whatever. How can I check if there is something wrong with the front end without taking it all apart?.
I have been chaseing this same problem with my 60. I am gaining a little ground but still not the best. Not to be a wise guy, but you'll never get it to "rack and pinion" performance.
I set it up useing the Corvette maintenance manual, and got it alot better. The trick to this whole thing is comming off of center of the worm, explained in this link...if it works.http://www.corvettesteering.com/corvette_steering_tech_tips.htm
You need to take the car to a front end shop with someone knowledgable about the old style front suspensions. These guys are fading fast. Most of the younger techs have never heard of kingpins and the like. You can test yourr kingpins, which are frequently worn out on these cars if they haven't been changed. Raise the car and pull on the top and bottom of the wheel while watching the kingpin. There should be no perceptable motion. Same goes for all the bushings on the control arms.
A suspension mechanic with any experience at all should be able to chaeck for wear points and tell you what's loose (if anything), even if he doesn't know how to fix it.
