Default Wheel question....

Here's my wheels presently on my 1960....

I don't believe they are clear coated and I was curious as to how to give them a really good shine...

I'm also debating replacing these wheels with some American Racing Torque Thrust D...

I was wondering if the American Racing wheels are had to mount on the wheel studs. With my existing rims it's a bit of a chore as the rim rides on the wheel nuts (unlike steel rims which ride on the wheel stud and the bolt goes snug against the rim). Getting the first and 2nd nut is always an excercise....

Also are the American Racing clear coated or not ? And which is the easiest to maintain (clear coat or not) ???

Sorry for so many questions but if I do get new rims I don't want to be going through the same problems I am going through now.... Of course there is always Wheel Vintiques Rally Wheels or a set of Cragers....BUT I've never had good luck with chromed wheels....but that's another story..... :-)

TIA

For polishing, I have had the best luck with the Wenol products. They bring up a good shine. I don't know about the TT D's, but the Torque Thrust IIs are not clear coated so they need to be polished regularly to keep them looking nice.

Wtih aluminum wheels, it is always a chore to keep them looking good. I would suggest first getting them polished by a professional wheel polishing shop (in yellow pages under metal polishing). They start with a heavy abrasive (sandpaper) and work their way down to a polish compound. There is a specical machine that they use for rims. It comes out like chrome when finished. I have tried doing it myself before but you can never get the shine they get with the industrial polisher.
Next I would suggest that you use Zoops Aluminum sealer to coat the wheels. (Easetwood now sells it) This stuff is a cermanic coating that prevents aluminum from oxidating and is supposed to last for a couple of years. I used it two years ago and my aluminum still looks like it just got polished.

good luck

One thing I dislike about my aluminum wheels is the fact they are difficult to mount as the rims ride on the wheel nuts unlike steel rims which ride on the wheel studs.

Do all aluminum wheels ride on the wheel nuts ?

I was told they have to as aluminum is much softer then steel...but I'm not really sure....
