A friend of mine bought a 58 and the speedometer is not working. It doesn't make any kind of noises or anything-it just doesn't work. Where do I start my research. The cable is hooked up to the tranny and dash, but that is all I know at this point. Do I need to take the dash cluster out? What else should I check?
well this could be a few things,One the cable is broken, two the gear in the trans is stripped and the cable isn't turning,Three the speedo is just worn out so bad it isn't doing anything.
Can you see the needle in the speedo,They have a habit of breaking on those years.Mayeb the speedo is turning but you can't see anything working.
Just gonna have to start taking things apart until you find out whats not working.
If the speedo needs some rebuilding Email me I'd be happy to help
O.K. guys I replaced the cable today, it was pinched and one of the ends was messed up. It still did not work, so I connected a cordless drill to the tranny end to see if the problem was at the dash or the tranny. The speedometer worked when I tried this, so the problem is at the tranny. How do I go about replacing the part that the cable screws into? Is this a special part that I need from a tranny shop, or can I get it at an auto part store? How do I replace this part?
The adapter sleeve that holds the speedo driven gear will pull right out of the tailhousing after removing the 7/16" head bolt and retainer plate; you'll probably find the plastic gear is stripped. If it isn't, the drive gear on the output shaft may be missing or mis-positioned.
When you go to take out the adapter, disconnect the speedo cable first (don't try to take out the adapter with the cable attached - trust me, you don't need to have the driven gear unable to rotate and stay inside the trans when the adapter is removed!).
