Default 64 Electrical Problems

I have a problem that is driving me nuts. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I just found out I have a 3 amp drain on my battery. I have pulled the fuses and don't loose the short as shown with the test light. What do I do next ? I think this tells me that the short is before the fuse box. I have to say I am not an electrician. Thanks.

Make sure your ignition switch is in the off or locked position. You can try and isolate the short by disconnecting the positive battery cable and removing the wires from the starter (the big terminal where the battrey cables runs to). See if the problem goes away, if it does than you could have a shorted starter. Put he battrey feeder wire back on the starter with one other wire at a time and see which wire has the short. Make sure you have the battery positive disconnected when you're working at the starter then hook it back up for troubleshooting. Chase down the short by continuing to isolate one section at a time, I ordered a wiring diagram from Letric Limited. It sounds to me like a bad component rather than a wire rubbing or touching ground. Good luck.

That is a large currect drain.
IS your alternator original? The voltage regulator?
Disconnect one wire at a time from the alternator ad check for the drain. Do the same thing for the regulator. My guess is it is the charging circuit.
Tip #1:
I keep my dated originals in a box in the garage and use a FLAPS for dirving. Output is 60 amps compared to 37 for the original.
Tip #2:
I won't use a LL diagram. I use a FULL COLOR diagram from Olson Engineering.

Where did you get the diagram?

A good color diagram would be really useful. I'm half tempted to scan in my LL chart at work at color it up myself.

I have the same sort of problem with mine. I pulled the fuses etc. I disconnect the batt if she's gonna sit [which isn't often]. Working on the car lately I noticed the fuel guage works all the time so must not be fused or keyed. How much does the fuel guage draw?

At least in the C1s, the fuel guage should be getting switched power from the ignition switch. If the guage is getting power, likely a lot of other items are getting power as well.

Send me an e-mail and I'll tell you how to get one. I drew them and they are NOT for sale. I would just like to recover my printing and mailing costs. I can even get it laminated for a small extra fee. They are about 22x34", list the lamps used and the fuses for coupes, convt.s, and any options. Diagrams cover 1958 and 1961-1970.

The electrical gauges in the C2 work on the "opposing coil" principal -- one electrical coil pulls the needle upscale and the other electrical coil pulls the needle downscale. The coil with the most current wins. With this type of gauge, the needle does not move much after power is removed when the key is shut off (and, if it does, it has a tendency to drift to center scale)-- giving the impression it is still active.

Since most of the "main" hot electrical connections are made at the horn relay, that would seem to be a good place to try to eliminate the offending wire.

Thank you, to all of you that responded. It looks like I have my work cut out for me tomorrow.
