Here is a technique for easy surface rust removal. It's much quicker and easier than using a wire brush or wheel.
1. Coat the surface rust with Naval Jelly (RED area)
2. Let sit for 10 minutes of so
3. Wipe off, a white residue will remain (PURPLE AREA)
4. Neutralize the Jelly (phosphoric acid) with a baking soda paste
5. Clean prepped area throughly
6. The remaining surface (GREEN) is completely clean and ready to paint
Heres another one ive used on floor pans.I used to get this stuff at the auto paint store called Kaptain Lees rust remover.Cant find it anymore so I use elctrolite, battery acid.Clean all loose scale and brush on this solution. Now take a tee shirt or some type of cloth and lay it on the area and brush out all air bubbles so that the cloth is laying completly flat on the area. The secret here is that you have to keep the area wet, once it dries it stops working. This stuff is as thin as water so it doesnt work that well on incline surfaces. For this I mix up a 50-50 solution of the acid and Navel Jelly. The thick Navel Jelly will keep this stuff from running of.I dont know if the early cars have metal floor pans but this process works.Once you do this to a rusted part it takes about 24-48 hours to dissolve the rust and leave fresh metal.
