Default Ignition Points

I purchased a new ACDelco #D106P, GM #12338659 points for my 65 base SB and found them to be different from what I took out this weekend. The difference is where you attach the main wire and condenser wire. The contact I took out has a screw that attaches the wires. The new ACDelco part has a spring that presses on the wires to hold them in place located on the other side where the attaching screw is located on my older part. I installed the new points and gapped them to .019 as outlined in the shop manual and the engine would not fire. I replaced the contacts with what I had removed and it fired right up.
Is this the correct part? If so what am I doing wrong? I have to imagine the timing isn't so far off since the older points work. The store where I got these from says they're correct.

The D106P is correct. Make sure the the flat side of the capacitor connector is against the flat side of the coil wire connecter when you put it into the points. Then what you might want to try is to forget about setting the gap and with the cap off, crank the engine and set the dwell to 28 - 32 degrees. If you don't have a meter, get one. It's a good investment. Next, check that the rotor is positioned correctly. There's a square peg on the bottom of the rotor that needs to go into the square hole on the top of the shaft. If that's alright, then pop the cap on and start it up. You'll need to check the dwell again but it will start.

Good luck.....

The D106PS has the screw like yours.
I don't like the new Delcos, Standard Ignition makes a better set in there Blue Streak version.
As for your problem I believe you put the dist. and condsenser wires on the wrong side of the plastic insulator and it became grounded. They should go between the tension spring and the insulator.

Thanks for all of the advice. I'll try installing the new points again this weekend. I'm not overly confident in the spring design. I would think the screw design is a better solution. I would hate for one of these wires vibrate off when I least expect it. Thanks again for the help.

The spring design has been used for many years, works fine, and I've never known one to vibrate loose or come off when properly installed.

Rest easy!!
